The Diving Belle

Spending the early part of my career in Florida, I had the opportunity to do a variety of underwater photography work thanks to the abundance of water-related activities. It’s a unique look, for sure, and you get to show viewers a perspective they otherwise wouldn’t see, which is something every photojournalist strives to do.

I recently started a project covering Tufts’ only male diver, who is the defending NCAA Division III National Champion, as he goes through this season (photos to come!). Not content to shoot just his dives, I fired off a bunch of frames of the women’s divers, as well.

Competing with air bubbles, some divers’ tendencies to rise through their wake, while treading water with a camera in your hands — It’s a tricky thing, shooting underwater. I used an Ewa Marine Bag, which is mildly cumbersome on its best day, opting to stay mainly on the surface, a few inches under. But despite the challenges and frustrations, when you pull off something you’re happy with, it’s a good feeling.

Here’s a few shots of Ali Maykranz, a senior on the diving team, who was kind enough to rise around her air bubbles to make a few interesting pictures.

Aquamen

Winter high school championship season got here fast! Then again, it’s been pretty hard to keep track of winter this year, with unseasonably warm temperatures and zero snow on the ground. I got in to the swing of things with some boys swimming from the MIAA North Sectionals. I’ve shot a bunch of swimming before, but MIT’s pool actually let me get into an elevated position to get some clean backgrounds for some diving photos, too.

Here some samples!

Like Fish

Continuing with this latest theme of high school sports championships, I wrapped up my weekend for the Herald with the MIAA Division 1 Swim Dive Championships over at Harvard’s Blodgett Pool. It was loud, hot and humid in there, so there were plenty of enthusiastic teammates on the deck to liven up the otherwise solitary scenes of lone swimmers in the water.

I had a full slate of assignments ahead of me for the Herald, so unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to stick around for any of the championship rounds. From what it sounded like in that confined space for the preliminary rounds, I’m sure it was crazy!
