Frozen Finals

We’re starting to wind down winter championship season here in Massachusetts. This year, it seemed like I was on hockey duty for the Boston Herald, covering the opening of the Super 8, and a few weeks later, finishing it up with the final Sunday at the TD Garden. The final was a pretty exciting game, matching No. 1 seed Malden Catholic with No. 2 St. John’s Prep. It was a high scoring game, 4-3, but it didn’t seem like there was a whole lot of clean action from whatever photo spot I happened to be shooting from. Sometimes, those are the breaks.

I piggybacked the girls’ Division 1 final into my night as well, covering Hingham as they cruised to a 3-1 victory over Acton-Boxborough to take the state championship. Most of the game, I was filing on deadline, right up to the last minute, so that meant I was chained to my laptop and shooting upstairs. No through-the-hole shots for me that close to deadline!

Here are some selects from the two games.

Speed Freaks

It’s getting to be winter championship season in Massachusetts, once again. This round, I was sent to the Reggie Lewis Center to photograph the MIAA Division 2 Indoor Track & Field Championships. Having run track in high school, it’s pretty odd that this was actually my first time ever covering it. Thankfully, everything was very familiar to me, so I got into a pretty good rhythm in knowing where to position myself for the best results, I hope.

It was a pretty good mix of action, though not much emotion until the girls’ two mile.

Here’s a selection of photos from the meet:

Like Fish

Continuing with this latest theme of high school sports championships, I wrapped up my weekend for the Herald with the MIAA Division 1 Swim Dive Championships over at Harvard’s Blodgett Pool. It was loud, hot and humid in there, so there were plenty of enthusiastic teammates on the deck to liven up the otherwise solitary scenes of lone swimmers in the water.

I had a full slate of assignments ahead of me for the Herald, so unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to stick around for any of the championship rounds. From what it sounded like in that confined space for the preliminary rounds, I’m sure it was crazy!
