999 Wins

1000.

That’s a pretty big number, especially when it comes to sports. For just about anything, it’s a milestone achievement, no matter how you put it.

I was hired Wednesday night by the Denver Post to cover the Nuggets as they faced off against the Celtics as head coach George Karl went for his 1,000th career coaching win. The assignment was simple — stay on the coach in the event that they win. Well, unfortunately for the Nuggets, and with star player Carmelo Anthony sidelined, a win wasn’t in the cards. It was pretty much a blowout, as the Celtics cruised to a 105-89 win.

Unfortunately, a coach not reaching a milestone isn’t exactly newsworthy, so my photos will be relegated to the back burner of history unless by some fluke, coach Karl never wins another game ever again.

Green Monsters

While the rest of the city had their minds set on Opening Night between the Red Sox and Yankees across town, it might have been easy to forget about the Celtics. There’s still a lot of basketball to be played, just in case anyone forgot.

The Celts have been trying to right the ship, as it were, trying to shake off the memory of a few crushing losses in their current six-game homestand — no easy task, with King LeBron James in town with the Cavaliers. The hometown team eventually pulled off the much-needed win, but it sure as hell wasn’t pretty — they ended up squeaking by, 117-113, after blowing a 22-point lead.

A playoff-caliber finish, and if the chippiness between the teams was any indication, the postseason should be quite exciting should they meet again. Here’s a few scenes from the game, with a looser edit available for viewing and licensing in my archive gallery.

Finally got around to photographing my first pro basketball, making my way over to the TD Garden for the Herald. The Celtics took on the Raptors, playing some sloppy, physical ball on their way to a 103-96 victory over their Canadian opponents.

Here’s some pics from the game, and a little PhotoShelter flash gallery.
