Sinking Ship

I spent this past Sunday at what will likely be my last baseball game of the season at Fenway, with my old beat the Tampa Bay Rays taking on the fast-fading Red Sox. With the Sox’ seemingly unbeatable Wild Card lead in jeopardy, the 4-game series over the weekend was particularly important going into the final week of the season. And as I’ve come to know the Rays over the past 5 years or so of my photojournalism career, it’s that the Rays know how to win when it matters.

And they sure proved it on Sunday, teeing off on Red Sox pitching and capitalizing on several miscues throughout the game.

There was a significant milestone during the game, though, as starting pitcher Tim Wakefield notched his 3000th inning in a Red Sox uniform. How about a little curtain call?

Double Trouble

Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes it rains.

That pretty much sums things up when you’re shooting baseball, and a pretty important reminder to always check the weather forecast and make sure you have proper rain gear.

The Herald had me scheduled for one of the Red Sox games for that weekend, but with Hurricane Irene bearing down on the Boston area, there was no way a game could have happened on Sunday. So, the Red Sox’ solution was simple —- doubleheader.

It’s been 5 years since I last shot a doubleheader, and 5 years since I shot in the rain. Just my luck, I got to do both in the same day. Some 12 hours later, with only 4.5 of those hours being baseball, I was done with an epic, exhausting and downright miserable day.

Here’s a small selection of my pictures from a very wet doubleheader.

And in case you were wondering, yes, we were all very wet in the photo wells.

But that doesn’t mean I couldn’t have a little fun during the rain delays, too!

Quack.

Found Lacking

It was a rough afternoon for the Red Sox on America’s birthday. Left in a deep hole by starting pitcher John Lackey — down 7 runs after 2 1/3 — the Sox just couldn’t dig themselves out, falling 2 runs shy in a 9-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. From a photo standpoint, it wasn’t a bad game to shoot. Unlike the Brewers game I shot the week before, the Red Sox continued to fight it out and keep the action going throughout the game. Sure, it stretched the game out that much longer — not something my body appreciated while baking in a shadeless 90+ degree photo pit for 3+ hours — but at least I think got some pictures that accurately captured the mood and frustration of the home town team. Bonus!

Here are some of my selects:

But, the afternoon wasn’t a total drag. The family of U.S. Navy Petty Ofc. Bridget Lydon was treated to a surprise visit from their sailor, who serves aboard the USS Ronald Reagan — that’s the boat that handled Osama Bin Laden’s burial at sea, by the way. In Fenway fashion, Lydon threw out the ceremonial first pitch, and guessing from her reaction, loved every minute of it!
