Frozen Finals

We’re starting to wind down winter championship season here in Massachusetts. This year, it seemed like I was on hockey duty for the Boston Herald, covering the opening of the Super 8, and a few weeks later, finishing it up with the final Sunday at the TD Garden. The final was a pretty exciting game, matching No. 1 seed Malden Catholic with No. 2 St. John’s Prep. It was a high scoring game, 4-3, but it didn’t seem like there was a whole lot of clean action from whatever photo spot I happened to be shooting from. Sometimes, those are the breaks.

I piggybacked the girls’ Division 1 final into my night as well, covering Hingham as they cruised to a 3-1 victory over Acton-Boxborough to take the state championship. Most of the game, I was filing on deadline, right up to the last minute, so that meant I was chained to my laptop and shooting upstairs. No through-the-hole shots for me that close to deadline!

Here are some selects from the two games.

Slap Shots

It’s been about 5 years since I shot my last pro hockey game, back down in Tampa. It was always freezing walking into the arena from the heat. You’d always have to bring extra layers and take a little bit of time to acclimate.

That’s not the case in the middle of winter in Boston. Walking into the Garden, with snowbanks piled up high and temps hovering near freezing, it feels downright balmy indoors.

But quips about weather aside, here’s some shots from yesterday’s Bruins game as they took on the surging San Jose Sharks. Things didn’t go so well for the Bruins, nor for me, as a matter of fact — 5 years off from pro hockey has left me more than rusty at a sport I’ve never been particularly adept at photographing.

Oh well. Here are some frames I was lucky enough to stumble into. My frustrations aside, I’ll admit, it was pretty fun to get back to shooting hockey, through the little hole in the glass and to track the action. Practice makes perfect, I guess!

Hockey, eh?

I don’t really consider myself a hockey photographer by any stretch. I didn’t grow up playing it, nor have I ever really found much enjoyment watching it. But, it’s not hard to understand why people like it.

The action’s fast, and there’s always a lot of contact — usually a good recipe for making decent pictures. I don’t photograph hockey very often. So, the few times that I do, it’s usually an exercise in patience and frustration as I try to fumble my way through a game trying to get something in focus.

This time around, I covered the NCAA Northeast Region Championship game at the DCU Center in Worcester, where Yale and Boston College squared off for a trip to Detroit to play in the Frozen Four. It was a high scoring, fast-paced game, with BC coming out on top, 9-7. Here are some selects from the night:

3.28.2010 — WORCESTER, Mass. — BC defenseman Carl Sneep, facing, is mobbed by teammates after scoring on a 150-foot shot against Yale in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship at the DCU Center in Worcester on Mar. 28, 2010.
