Davis Square Eats

Since I moved to Somerville last year, I’ve spent my fair share of hard-earned cash at most of the local eateries and watering holes. Two of these spots just so happened to be in the rotation for a TuftsNow, the official news site for my employer Tufts University, feature called Dish, where we review restaurants that serve the University community — A treat for a guy like me who loves to eat and drink…

First up for me was Foundry on Elm, which is a frequent hangout spot for my friends and I. Here’s a sampling of some of the dishes I photographed:

Next up was Posto, which I had not tried. Thanks to the crazy skills of the folks in the kitchen, I got treated to some of the most beautiful dishes I’ve ever photographed. Amazing work by the crew over there, tasty too!

Many thanks to both of the kitchen crews at Foundry on Elm and Pizzeria Posto!

Matzomania

Fans of competitive eating and matzo, I do believe I stumbled into your dream photo assignment yesterday.

The folks at Maxie’s Deli in Stoughton put together a Matzo Mania matzo ball eating contest to raise money for New England Sinai’s Alzheimer’s day program, and sure enough, I had the pleasure of starting my Sunday shift for the Boston Herald getting pictures of people jamming unleavened bread balls down their gullets. From what the organizers told me, the event was a resounding success, packing about 100 people into the restaurant to watch 18 competitors and raising more than $5,000 for the hospital.

Success for the competitors came in the form of winner Joe Menchetti of Cheshire, Conn., who downed 51 matzo balls within the 8-minute timel limit. Then again, everyone was a winner in my book if they didn’t have to use the barf buckets…

Basho

I had another “Diners Dining” assignment for the Boston Herald last week at a new restaurant across the street from Fenway Park. “Hip” is only the beginning when describing the decor of Basho Japanese Brasserie — What the heck is a “Brasserie” anyway? The interior made for some interesting pictures, and of course, the food looked delicious. Can’t ask for a better combination than that!

Here’s a few from the assignment.

7.11.2010 — BOSTON — Sushi chefs prepare some sushi rolls in front of an elaborately lit backdrop at Basho Japanese Brasserie on Boylston Street on July 11, 2010.

7.11.2010 — BOSTON — Cook Mike Carletti prepares a meal at a robata grill, the first of its kind in Boston, at Basho Japanese Brasserie on Boylston Street on July 11, 2010. The grill uses traditional Japanese high-density charcoal in a specially ventilated room to keep patrons from grill fumes.
