The Faithful Rally

I spent my Sunday night in church — The Charles Street AME Church in Roxbury to be exact. The black clergy of Boston were holding an “emergency rally,” as they were calling it, to show their support for Charles Street, which is fighting foreclosure hearings from its lender, OneUnited Bank. My colleague Rich Weir reports in more detail for the Boston Herald.

With the passion and volume of a Southern Baptist service, the religious and civic leaders on the pulpit preached to the standing-room audience with songs and sermons. That kind of combination usually makes for some good moments for photos.

The Longest Night

With all this talk about a white Christmas, sometimes it’s easy to overlook the homeless. Every year for the past 20 years, the Cathedral Church of St. Paul has their homeless memorial service on the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year.

This isn’t the first time I’ve photographed one of these events — I covered one back in Tampa a few years back. Obviously, weather conditions are much different in Florida, so it definitely has a bit of a different feel back in Boston. With the heavy snow last week and the bitter cold that’s been lingering for the past month, I can only imagine how difficult it is on the street.

Here are some photos from the service:
