Marathon Sunday

The fans at Fenway Park certainly got their money’s worth Sunday afternoon — those who stuck around to the bitter end, anyway.

Almost 6 hours after the first pitch, the Red Sox and the Orioles finally wrapped up a 17-inning marathon, using all of the pitchers in their bullpens in a game that was ultimately decided by their designated hitters… who were pitching. It’s a tough way to lose a game, but given the bullpen woes of the Red Sox this season, such a strong showing by the relief corps had to have been at least somewhat encouraging.

In what was surely an up-and-down affair, I’ll try to let my pictures tell the story.

So, yeah, I moved a lot of frames across these 17 innings — that’s almost 2 complete games of baseball, if you were counting. If you want to see more, by all means, check out the full gallery here.

There may or may not have been some Instagramming between innings, as well.

Sinking Ship

I spent this past Sunday at what will likely be my last baseball game of the season at Fenway, with my old beat the Tampa Bay Rays taking on the fast-fading Red Sox. With the Sox’ seemingly unbeatable Wild Card lead in jeopardy, the 4-game series over the weekend was particularly important going into the final week of the season. And as I’ve come to know the Rays over the past 5 years or so of my photojournalism career, it’s that the Rays know how to win when it matters.

And they sure proved it on Sunday, teeing off on Red Sox pitching and capitalizing on several miscues throughout the game.

There was a significant milestone during the game, though, as starting pitcher Tim Wakefield notched his 3000th inning in a Red Sox uniform. How about a little curtain call?

Double Trouble

Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes it rains.

That pretty much sums things up when you’re shooting baseball, and a pretty important reminder to always check the weather forecast and make sure you have proper rain gear.

The Herald had me scheduled for one of the Red Sox games for that weekend, but with Hurricane Irene bearing down on the Boston area, there was no way a game could have happened on Sunday. So, the Red Sox’ solution was simple —- doubleheader.

It’s been 5 years since I last shot a doubleheader, and 5 years since I shot in the rain. Just my luck, I got to do both in the same day. Some 12 hours later, with only 4.5 of those hours being baseball, I was done with an epic, exhausting and downright miserable day.

Here’s a small selection of my pictures from a very wet doubleheader.

And in case you were wondering, yes, we were all very wet in the photo wells.

But that doesn’t mean I couldn’t have a little fun during the rain delays, too!

Quack.
