Looking Back at 2013

Every time I sit down and write one of these 2013 retrospectives, it’s a nice opportunity to reflect back on everything I’ve done for the past 12 months, to see what kinds of gains I’ve made, where I need to improve, and hopefully, to see how much fun I’ve had.

This year was different, though, filled with a lot of really big moments in my career and personal life, with one big, life-changing news event sandwiched right in the middle. It’s hard to look back at a year like that and not think, “How the hell do I top that? Where do I go from here?” It’s a lot to digest, for sure, though I’m pretty sure the answer will come from continuing to do what I do.

I read a post from Joe McNally that I think summed everything up nicely, so I’m going to borrow a quote from him:

Try to do some good work this year. Be straight up with all concerned. Be fair and decent to all the folks around us. For my part, I’ll continue to attempt to be at peace with the absolute certainty that some of my pictures this year will be good, and others will outright suck…

I understand fully at this point the Sisyphean task at hand. I will never shoot my “best” picture. That will always be in the future, out there, like a mirage, receding continuously, even as I stumble towards it, parched and half delirious at the prospect of that potentially momentous click. In the meantime, I will attempt to avoid shooting my worst picture.

Anyway, here’s my 2013 in pictures.

Here’s that “really big, life-changing news event” that I was talking about earlier, the Boston Marathon bombings. I’ve wrote about my account of the bombings, which has been published in various versions on SportsShooter (complete version), Bloomberg and Tufts. There are some graphic images in here, so please keep that in mind as you scroll down.

It wouldn’t be a proper year-end wrap up if I didn’t give a shout out to the November Project, as well, an awesome group of folks I started working out with back in July.
