Sarah & Wes — Married!

As I mentioned in an earlier post (Something Borrowed, Something Blue), I photographed the wedding of two of my very best friends — the new Wes and Sarah Phillips — not too long ago.

Factoring in the beautiful location at the Powel Crosley Estate in Sarasota, Fla., fantastic weather right on the water, plus a gathering of 111 good people, and you’ve got a recipe for a perfect wedding. The bonus of having a great relationship with the bride and groom didn’t hurt either, as I got all the access I needed and could get away with things I wouldn’t dream of otherwise.

It was easily the hardest — and sometimes most stressful — weekend of work I’ve ever had, but also a tremendous honor to be part of the beginning of the rest of Wes and Sarah’s life together.

But enough rambling — here are some of my favorites from the day. (To see a wider selection, check out the full collection on my main website.)

Matzomania

Fans of competitive eating and matzo, I do believe I stumbled into your dream photo assignment yesterday.

The folks at Maxie’s Deli in Stoughton put together a Matzo Mania matzo ball eating contest to raise money for New England Sinai’s Alzheimer’s day program, and sure enough, I had the pleasure of starting my Sunday shift for the Boston Herald getting pictures of people jamming unleavened bread balls down their gullets. From what the organizers told me, the event was a resounding success, packing about 100 people into the restaurant to watch 18 competitors and raising more than $5,000 for the hospital.

Success for the competitors came in the form of winner Joe Menchetti of Cheshire, Conn., who downed 51 matzo balls within the 8-minute timel limit. Then again, everyone was a winner in my book if they didn’t have to use the barf buckets…

Global Focus

Seems like I’ve been on quite the roll with the Chronicle of Higher Education lately — their assignments always put me in touch with interesting people doing interesting things, so I can hardly complain! This time around, I was sent to the HULT International School of Business in Cambridge, which is a startup school with several campuses around the world. The HULT program isn’t well known locally, but the story was about how it’s found success in a relatively short period of time thanks to the strength of its international focus.

I could definitely tell there was a lot of energy in the building that houses the school, which occupies two floors of the parent company that operates it. There was collaboration throughout the floors in all of the study room, which line the perimeter. I don’t think I’ve ever seen quite as diverse a student body as I saw when I visited that afternoon, either.

Again, if you can get around the paywall, take a read of the full story on the Chronicle’s site.

Here’s a selection of photos from the assignment:
