Monkey Business

Busy busy weekend working both days of the weekend for the Herald. It’s been awhile since I’ve had to work two days in a row as a photojournalist, and it’s really been a reminder of how much I love the job.

So first assignment of the weekend was a trip to the zoo to photograph a rather sad-looking white-cheeked gibbon named Iggy at the Stone Zoo in Stoughton, Mass. Her particular species is critically endangered, so unfortunately, the cage is probably the best place for her.

6.13.09 -- STONEHAM, Mass. -- Iggy, a White-cheeked Gibbon, looks out from her enclusre at the Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Mass., on June 13, 2009. Saturday was the opening day for Iggy, who is on loan from the Bronx Zoo via the species survival plan. The critically endngered White-cheeked Giggons are native to the evergreen forests of Vietnam and Laos, and the Stone Zoo is expected to receive a male for breeding in the next few weeks.

Anyway, fun assignment. How can you not have fun at the zoo?

The rest of the day ended up ridiculously hectic, with a quick trip to the House of Blues (pictures to come later) and then a stop off in Stoughton to do a followup on a story from the day before.

The Sweet Science

I recently started working on a personal project on boxing, which is something I’ve been wanting to do for quite some time. Thanks to my friend, O’Ryan Johnson, a badass reporter at the Boston Herald, I got the hookup with one of the local boxing clubs. I’ve got a little story going that’s very much a work in progress, but I’m quite excited to see where it goes.

I’m not quite ready to post anything from that story yet, but here’s a cool frame I got before OJ’s fight at the Nonantum Boxing Club in Newton.

5.30.09 - O'Ryan Johnson warms up on the roof deck of the Nonantum Boxing Club with trainer Rodney Toney before his fight on May 30, 2009.
